AMATEUR ATHLETICS
SATURDAY’S CHAMPIONSHIPS. The entries for the New Zealand amateur athletic championships, to be decided on tho Basin Reserve on Saturday, are quite up to standard, and everything promises well for a day of keen sport. Past favourites who will be missing are Woodger, Kerr, Opie and Kill,, but the interest in the championships is by no means diminished. If the above-named were competing they would (if in form) be almost certain championship winners, but in their absence the question is who will bo the new champions t There are plenty of first-class men entered for each event to make guessing of the resvjts somewhat hazardous. In the sprints (including 440yds) most prominent entrants are Duncan and Wilton (VVellingtou), Mark and Dormer (Auckland), Saunders (Southland), and Thomas (Canterbury). Dormer (New Zealand half-mile record holder) and 'Thomas will also be out iu tbe half-mile and mile, for which there are also entered Bradbury and Byrne (Wellington). The three miles event will lie chiefly between Beatson (Otago) and Byrne (Wellington)- The field events include such well-known exponents as McKay (Wellington), pole vault; MoHolm (Wellington), throwing hammer; Kean (Southland), throwing hammer; de Their (Canterbury-), putting shot; Oilier and Whittaker (Southland), pole vault. The "star” performer of the meeting will, however, be G. P. Keddeli, the present New Zealand and Australasian hurdles champion- His hurdling is worth a visit to see in itself. The City Band will ha in attendance, and afternoon tea will To obtainable.
