JAPANESE MAIL LINE

NO SERVICE TO NEW ZEALAND. Recently it was reported that tho Nippon Yusen Kaisha line was likely to extend its service to New Zealand, and a letter was sent from tho Wellington Chamber of Commerce to Messrs Burns, Phflp and Co., Sydney, managing agents for the Japanese lino, pointing out tho advantages of Wellington as a port of call. Messrs Burns, Philp and Co. have replied, stating that some articles on the subject had appeared in Japanese papers, and these had been copied in Australia, but in private correspondence received from tho president of the Nippon Yusen Kaisha Company it was stated that there was no present intention of the service being extended either to South Australia or New Zealand. The company was placing larger vessels on the Australian line, as at present both passengers and cargo were being shut out. Beyond this nothing had so far been decided. If there was any probability of the vessels trading to the .Dominion, the letter of tho Wellington Chamber of Commerce would receive consideration.
