AMATEUR ATHLETICS
NEW ZEALAND CHAMPION SHIPU. For the first time in five years the Wellington public will have the opportunity next Saturday of witnessing on the Basin Reserve the premier athletic ©vent in the Dominion, the New Zealand amateur athletic championship meeting. The entries closed on Saturday, and the list shows that tho five centres will be represented by strong teams. Tho present holders of tho championship shield, the Southland Centre, are eending up a formidable team, headed by G. P. Keddell, the New Zealand and Australasian hurdle champion, who is one of the world.’* finest exponents of hurdling, and i* the holder of the Australasian record of 15 3-Xoseo for 120 yards hurdles. Another champion of tho first flight who will be competing is A. W. Dorm©r, the Auckland middle distune* runner, joint holder of the New Zea< land half-mile record, and one of the most promising runners of the younger school. Other well known Australav sian and New Zealand champions and ex-champions competing will be J. McHolmo (hammer-throwing), McKay (pole vault), Bissett (hammer-throw-ing), Kerr and Cashman (walks), Beatson and Bradbury (distance running) and Wilton (quarter-mile). COUNTRY CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS Tho Wellington provincial country clubs championships will be held at Palmerston North on Wednesday, February 19th. As this meeting is held only a few days after the New Zealand championships, competitors at the latter meeting should be able to make it conveniently fit in with their arrangements. The Manawatu Club has a track which is reckoned one of the best in the Dominion, and is certainly as good as any in tho Wellington province. The club has proved that it is capable of running a big meeting by the way it handled the cross-country championships, so that intending competitors should have no doubts on that score. The championship events are: 109 yds, 220yds, 440yds, 880yds, one mile, 120yds hurdles, one mile walk, high jump, long jump, and one mile relay (teams of four, each man to run 440 yards). Tho Wairarapa Club will probably send a strong team to the meeting, and Feilding will not be behind in this respect. Entries close with tho hon. secretary, Douglas M. Park, Palmerston North, on Wednesday next.
