From Our Own Correspondent. February 3. Mr Fish, manager of the Bank of New South Wales at Eketahuna, and formerly of Masterton, has been appointed manager, of the bank s branch at Westport. Mr Irish was a wellknown tenuis, golf, and cricket player* When ho resided in Masterton some years ago he made several fine scores for the Masterton Club, and also bowled well. Mr Fish will leave Kkotahuna this week, and will be succeeded by air Cameron, of Masterton. On Friday evening Mr and Airs A. Falknor were sitting in a room in their house at Kaiparoro when a bullet crashed through tho window and e rn ~ bedded itself in tbo wall opposite. Fortunately neither Air nor Airs Falkner were in a direct lino with the window, but the escape from serious, if not fatal, injury was a narrow one. Rain fell on twelve days in Eketahuna during January, tho total fall being 5.31 inches. The Pahiatua-Akitio A. and P. Association has now a membership or 2(50. The takings at the Pahiatua show last Friday amounted to £2B 2s 6d, which is a decrease of £l3 as compared with tho previous show. _ , Tho Kaitawa-Rongomai Rifle Club held a competition on Saturday for a trophy presented by Mr G. Tbo Pabiatua-Akitio A. and P. Association will hold its annual horticultural and industrial exhibition on March 4th. Usually tho association holds the exhibition at the same time as its show. During tho month of January two births, dno death, and two marriages were registered in Eketahuna. Tho Eketahuna Bowling Club is endeavouring to arrange a match against the Masterton Bowling Club before the season closes. It is probable that a poll will be taken on tho half-holiday question in Masterton. Various sports bodies intend to interest themselves in the matter, with the object of securing Saturday as tho day. . The oat crops in the district are now being harvested. The yields are much below last season. The biggest return so far is S 4 bushels, as compared with 110 bushels last season. . A horse attached to a trap driven by a Maori named Mika Hikatoa took fright at a motor-car, driven by Mr Vermeil, at the Pahaoa ford on Sunday morning, and capsized the vehicle down a bank. The Maori received soveto injuries to tus head, and. was subsequently removed to the Masterton hospital for treatment. Mr Frank Grady, of "Wellington, has presented two gold medals to the Masterton Bowling Club for competition. A match for the Wairarapa championship fours was played on Saturday last between the Masterton team (J. C. Ewington, Townsend, O. Pragnell, and Hollings) and the Carterton team (Hughan, Hall, Hasson, and Lmdop). Masterton won by 34 points' to 21 points. „ ' . February 4. During tho month of J anuary building permits for work to the value of £659 were issued by the Masterton Borough Council. Tho Wairarapa Amateur Athletio Club will hold a 75yds and 880yds handicap on Thursday evening on the Park Oval. , Last month eleven motor-cars and five motor-cycles were registered in Masterton. Tho Kaitawa Ladies’ Morns-tnba Club held a competition last week, the best scores being as follow: Mrs Bland 29 (possible 35), Miss L. I. Ross 29, Miss M. Swan 29. Miss I. Ross 27, Mrs D. Ross 26, Miss E. Kerridge 26, Miss L. M. Ross 26. The Pahiatua Druids’ Lodge has a financial membership of seventy-five. A swimming tournament is to be*held at Pahiatua on February 19th. A number of Masterton swimmers will probably compete. Following the example of the Masterton A. and P. Association the Dannevirke A. and P. Association has decided to hold a gift stock fair. A sports meeting is to be held at Pukehinan next month, at which several Masterton athletes will compete. Dipping operations are in full swing in some portions of the North Wairarapa. Messrs A. Barrell, H. Cowan, A. Quinlan, E. Ashby, and A. McPherson have been gazetted members of tho Mangatainoka Domain Board. In a lawn tennis match played at Pahiatua last Saturday between the town and country teams the former Won by seventeen games to eight. The Pahiatua Bowling Club defeated Woodville on Saturday by 48 points to 28. A Greytown rink intends to challenge the Wairarapa champion fours team (Messrs Ewington, Townsend, 0. Pragnell, and Hollings) for tho champion medals.
