OBITUARY
A CELEBRATED PHYSICIAN. LONDON, February 1. The death is reported of Lord likeston. Baron Ilkeston, the celebrated physician, was a son of Balthazar hosier, Beaulieu, Hants. Ho was educated at Drogheda Grammar School, and Trinity College, Dublin. He subsequently became Professor of Medicine at Queen's College, Birmingham, and from 1868-90 acted as physician to the Birmingham General Hospital. Ho was President of Council from 1884-87, and received the gold medal for Distinguished Merit in connection with the British Medical Association, in 1897, and was a member of the General Medical Council j 886-96. Baron Ilkeston subsequently entered Parliament as member for Chester, 188586, was Parliamentary Secretary to Local Government Board. 1892-95, chairman of the National Liberal Federation, 18861890, President of the Allotments and Small Holdings Association 1892, and President of the Land Law Reform Association 1899-1908. He again entered Parliament for the Ilkeston Division of Derbyshire, 1887-1910, and received the Freedom of Ilkeston in 1904, and was created Baron in 1910. Baron Ilkeston was the author of several valuable publications. He married Emily, tho daughter of W. L. Sargant, Edgbaston, and has one son, Hon. B. Stephen S< Foster, who succeeds to tho title, and three daughters. EARL CRAWFORD. (Received February 2, 5.5 pan.) LONDON, February 2. Tho death is announced of Earl Crawford, head of the House of Lindsay. horn July, 18-17. He was tho 26th Earl since tho title was created in 1398. HLs heir is Lord BaL carres, M.P. for Chorley division of Lancashire. ADMIRAL SIR F. BEDFORD. (Received February 2, 5J5 p-m.) LONDON, February 2. Admiral Sir Frederick Bedford is dead. Admiral Bedford was born in 1833. Ho was Governor-General of West Australia, 1903-9. Ho entered the Royal Navy in 1852; became lieutenant, 1859; commander, 1871; captain, 1876; rearadmiral, 1891; vice-admiral, 1897; ad-* miral, 1902. Lord of the Admiralty, 1889-92 and 1895-99; Commander-in-chief on North American and West Indies station. 1899-1903. During his Lon* career he won many distinctions.
