ZEALAND COUNCIL MEETS.
WELLINGTON "THREATS” CAUSE SURPRISE.

CHRISTCHURCH, January 30. At a meeting of the CouncU of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association to-night a letter was received from Mr J. P. Atkins, chairman of the Wellington, Centre, requesting the council to •alter tho amateur definition eo as to exclude Northern Union footbaU players. The writer threatened that tho Wellington Centro would secede if the request was not granted. It was decided to reply that the present definition was unanimously adopted by delegates from aU the associations in conformity with the definition of tho International Swimming Association, and the council had no intention of altering it. Surprise was expressed at the threatening nataroof Mr Atkins’s letter.
WELLINGTON CENTRE EXECUTIVE MEETING.
The executive of the Wellington Centra of tho New Zealand Swimming Association met last night. Mr J. F- AtJana presided. Messrs Somerville, Smith. Levy, Bliok, and Ronayn© were also preA commnnication waa received from tho Hawke’s Bay Centre protesting against tho council’s action in allotting the New Zealand championships for 1914 to Nelson, in view of the fact that the 1913 conference had recommended either Otago or Hawke’s Bay. Assistance waa sought in having the matter put night, Mr Atkins was authorised to use his own discretion at the Wanganui conference when the matter came upA subcommittee was appointed to arrange for a tournament between W ollington and Canterbury swimmers at Te Are Baths on February 13th. The competition will include water polo, a relay race, and diving. The Levin Club intimated that it had fixed its annual carnival for Wednesday. February 13th, and asked for the support of Wellington swimmers on their way back from the championships. The matter was left to the manager of the team. It was decided to pay the expenses of Miss Annie O’Leary (Maaterton), who is to represent Wellington in _ tho ladies' championship at Wanganui, provided that the required sum is not raised in Maaterton.
The secretary reported that there was a credit balance of about JB3O.
Permission was given to the Star Boating Club to hold a swimming carnival on February Bth. The polo committee was recommended to arrange for matches to he played at the Thorndon baths as well as at Xe Aro.
