AMATEUR ATHLETICS

PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS. There is every prospect of a very staa oeesful sports meeting on the Basin Reserve on Saturday, when the amateur athletic championships of tho Wellington province will bo decided. Chief interest centres in the contest for the McViily Challenge Shield, which is to be awarded to the club scoring most points in championship events. The Masterton Amateur Athletic Club is sending down forty-seven athletes to try to gain the shield, and the fight between the Wairarapa representatives and the present holders —the Wellington Amateur Club—is sure to be of the keenest description. In addition there are three handsome challenge cups to be competed for—the Guise Cup for the 100yds fiat championship, the Bannister Cup for the 440yds flat championship, and the W. H. Pollock Cup for the BSoyds flat championship. The entries for all events are very satisfactory, and include all the best local talent. Tho form shown at the meeting will aid tho selectors in choosing the local team for tho New Zealand championship meeting, and at the same time will bo an indication of Wellington’s chances of securing the New Zealand championship athletic shield. The first event is timed to start at 2J.5 pjn.

A meeting of the Wellington centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association will be held on Monday evening, when arrangements will be made in connection with the Now Zealand championship meeting. The foUowing notices of motion will bo considered; (1) That Mr Duncan's motion re substitution of trophies, etc., for medals as prizes to winners of the New Zealand championships be rescinded and expunged from the records of the centre; (2) that a permanent programme lor the McViUy Shield competition bo drawn up at this meeting, and strictly adhered to at all future nrovi offal clcmpionship meetings; *9) that the programme for the MeVilly -hirid competition be the New Zealand champion ship programme.
