TAKAPUNA NOTES

Special to tho “Times.”

AUCKLAND, January 28. The Takapnna Jockey Club will inaugurate its meeting at Devonport tomorrow. Tho racing will open with the Maiden Plate, and Kotiropu will probably rule a strong favourite, but the chances are that sho will bo reserved for the Stewards’ Handicap later in the afternoon. Of tho others engaged recent form points to Almeida. In the Zealaudia Handicap Glad Tidings sliould be in most demand, as he is undoubtedly possessed of a rare dash of speed. In the Orewa Hurdles Seaman and Miss Explosion will be the favourites. Seaman is in fine form, and is the best jumper of the pair. There will be a big field in the Ferry Handicap, and I hear a whisper that Union Jack will be hard to beat. A good “rough ’un” may be Merrimax, who is on tho improve. In the Calliope Handicap Lady Alicia has only three opponents to dispose of. Two of them, King Lupin and Christine, have yet to race, and there may be a surprise, but it is unlikely. Hey boy will probably find most support in the Maiden Hurdles, in which a very moderate lot of horses are engaged. Tho Takapnna Cup is considered to be very open. La Reina may be the favourite, but Electrakoffi and Master Jack are sure to make a bold bid for victory. In tho Stewards’ Glad Tidings will be meeting a couple of speedy ones in Waiorewa and Monoline, and the race should be fought out between these three.

Sedition, who has been showing signs of soreness, was withdrawn from the Takapuna Cup on Monday.
