THE MAYORALTY ELECTIONS.
CITY OF WELLINGTON. The polling commenced at 9 a.ra,, at the Academy of Music, and terminated at 6 p.ra. Soon afterwards it was ascertained that the numbers were as follows : Hutchison ... .i. ... 646 Allen .;. ... ... ... 356 Majority for Hutchison ... 290 There was but little excitement during the day, but still it was noticeable that the friends and admirers of the successful candidate were working very hard, and, as will bo seen from the figures, they were amply compensated for the trouble which they took. It is interesting to recall the totals polled just a twelvemonth ago, when the contest lay between Messrs. Dransfield and Hutchison. The votes polled then were : Dransfield ... ... ... 740 Hutchison ... ... ... 738 Although the present ratepayers’ roll is a much larger one than that of last year, still 476 more votes were polled in 1878 that during the present election. When Messrs. Hutchison and Hunter stood for the Mayoralty, the numbers polled were ns follows : Hutchison ... ... .. 699 Hunter ... ... ... ... 664 It will thus be seen that Mr. Hutchison polled 53 more votes at that election than during the present one, although the number of ratepayers on the roll was considerably less.
