(PER PRESS AGENCY.) Christchurch, Thursday. Valpy, for embezzling £5 fis., the property of the Railway Employes Benefit Society, some time back, was committed for trial. Bail was allowed. A new masonic lodge is about to be formed in Sydenham. Dunedin, Thursday. Two men were fined 40s. and coats at the City Court for obstructing the footway by loitering. Mr. Stout is contributing to the Times a series of articles against the Budget proposals. He says to the settler it means additional taxation to the extent of £ll 15s. ; to city tradesmen, £2O 17s. 6d. ; to the manufacturer, £B3 6s. ; to the merchant, £63 6s. Bd. The general impression here is that the tax includes all kinds of personal property. A private telegram received here states that sugar has advanced £2 per ton in Melbourne. The Licensed Victuallers held a meeting today to consider the proposed taxation. Soma members agreed in favor of asking for a remission of the property tax for publicans, and others that proposed increase in spirits should be petitioned against. It was resolved to ask the Government to reduce the proposed duty to 13s. per gallon, and failing that, to exempt hotelkeepers from payment of the property tax. The Tuapeka County Council have reduced the official salaries all round. The Press speak more or less strongly in condemnation of the Financial Statement. Timaru, Thursday. A guard of the Rocket Brigade was on watch all night in consequence of the rough weather. Towards morning the wind lulled and the sea began to drop. No damage has been done to the Breakwater by the heavy seas. John Doyle yesterday afternoon was committed for trial on a charge of forgery at Temuka. The prisoners now awaiting trial at the Supreme Court number nine. There are four charges of forgery and uttering cheques, one of forging a deed of property against Edward James, two of accessories to forgery, one of obstructing the railway with malicious intent, and two of common larceny. Lyttelton, Thursday. At the adjourned inquest on the body of the infant Albert Fogarty, the jury returned a verdict that death was caused by general emaciation, brought on by the neglect of the mother, Mary Ann Fogarty. O amard, Thursday. The sixteenth annual show of the North Otago Agricultural Association commenced to-day. So far the show has been a great success. The exhibits in all classes on the ground to-day are the best ever seen in Otago. Nelson, Thursday. A'! h.quist was commenced yesterday on the body of the infant found, when it came out that the mother was a servant girl named Alice Sutton. The medical evidence was that the child was born alive, but had pro- ,
bably been suffocated by the blood aud mucus found in the throat. The inquest was adjourned for eight days, to allow the girl to be present. GrahaMSTOWN, Thursday. The charge of lareenoy brought agunst exSergeanfc Lambert yesterday was continued today before the R. M., aud dismissed. The Albumin mine shows no falling off in its production ; IScwt. of picked stone now crushing at the Herald battery. Shares are firm at 80s., and a large business was done today at that figure. Auckland, Thursday. The tobacconists have seat a memorial to Sir G.'orge Grey against a new duty, and in favor of a license, excluding grocers. The latter are rather ind : guant at the wording of the memorial, which described as “ illegitimate dealings” the sale of tobacco by shops not exclusively devoted to the trade. Three waterspouts were observed yesterday passing towards Maunkan. Very heavy torrents of rain fell last night. The Artists’ Exhibition opened to-day. There were excellent pictures. The Carandini Opera aud Ballad Company will come to Auckland from Sydney by the Rotomahana.
