VITAL STATISTICS.

The Registrar-General’s report on the vital statistics of the principal towns of New Zealand during the month of July, 1879, is as follows :

Return of the Number of Births, with the actual Mortality, and the Proportion of Deaths to Population, in the under-men-tioned Boroughs, during the Month of July, IS 79.

The deaths of persons not residents of the boroughs, occurring at hospitals, have been exeluded in all cases. Population.—ln the cases marked thns * the numbers given are for the 3rd March, 1878, according to the census then taken ; in the other cases the numbers have been estimated for the Ist January, 1879. The total births in the above boroughs, excluding Sydenham (now entered for the first time), amounted to 489, against 395 in June, an increase of 94. The deaths amounted to 165 in July, an increase of 21 on the number in June. Of the above deaths, males contributed 114; females, 67. 88 of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 48'6 i per cent, the whole number; 66 of these were of children under one year of age. The following remarks apply only to the above four principal boroughs;— The births were 279 in July, against 225 in June, an increase of 54. ■ The deaths in July were 97, against 84 in June, an increase of 13. There were 6 deaths of persona of 65 years and upwards—viz., 3 females of 70, 72, and 73 in Wellington ; and 2 females of 65 and ,78, and 1 male of 78 in Dunedin.

Zymotic diseases.—The deaths from zymotic diseases, which decreased from 28 in May to 22 in June, have farther decreased from 22 in June to 15 in July. Typhoid fever caused 2 deaths in July, against 3 in June. Constitutional diseases.— The deaths fro, these diseases also decreased from 19 in June is 15 in July. Of these, the deaths from phthis were S in July, against 13 in June.
