RIFLE MATCH.
The match arranged between the Wellington Artillery Volunters and H.M S. Emerald was fired off yesterday, and resulted in a victory for the Emerald by 1 point. The Artillery were no doubt under a great disadvantage in having to use the old converted Snider carbines, while their opponents were armed with Martini-Henry rifles, which proved to be far superior at the long range, the Artillery leading up to 400yds. by 14 points. This majority was gradually reduced at the 500yds. range, and it was not until the last shot was fired that a victory could be claimed. A large number of the officers and men of the Emerald were present to witness the match. There was also a good attendance of the public.
At the conclusion, Lieutenant McCredie declared the scores, and expressed the plea ure they had in meetings representative team from one of her Majesty’s ships. The result, he might say, was to some extent anticipated by them. They had had a most interesting contest, and he hoped that arrangements might be made for a return match at a future date. He then called for three cheers for the victors, which were heartily responded to. The following are the scores : ARTILLERY. OAA A Art EilA
