CENSUS RETURNS.

We have received some further tables of census returns, in anticipation of the complete abstracts. The following table shows the number of occupied holdings of over one acre in extent in the different provincial districts, and also specifies the large pastoral holdings over 20,000 acres in extent :

In 1871 there were only 3987 acres of plantations.

The following table shows the number of horses, cattle, and sheep in the_ colony, exclusive of those owned by Maoris. The total number of stock in the different provinces is as follows :

There are 2,611,926 acres fenced in bj fences of various descriptions exclusive of wir.; fencing, and 8,755,639 acres by wire fencin'; only; making a total of laud enclosed o* 11.567,565 acres. In 1871 there were on! 6,770,299 acres fenced in. There were at th time of taking the census 374 steam threshin , machines, and 511 worked by horse or 1 water power; 4829 reaping machines, 34 steam ploughs, and 32 steam harrows.
