DIOCESAN SYNOD.
Monpav, October 14. Present—-The President. Clergy Archdeacon Storir, Revs. Tudor, Ballaoboy, Harvey, Ho Castro. Mo William, Panconrt, Towgood, Coffey, Thorpe, Topett, and Toaklo. Laity—The Lay Secretary. Messrs. Hunter, Lowe, Porter, Bowles. France, Pliinrner, Brown. Ly aght, Lockett, Halcombe, Williams, Rous-Marton, Colonel Lockie, and Captain Hewitt Proceedings ope-cd with prayer. Minutes of former day’s proceedings were read and con Brined. Tho Rev, B. W, Harvey rend the report of the committee appointed to consider whether any means can bo devised for raising a sufficient fund for diocesan purposes, and, gave notice that ho would move for tho adoption of the report, and that it should be printed in tho report of tho eynod, and also for tho adoption of the resolutions attached to tho report. 1. That a general canvass of tho diocese be at once undertaken with a view to ascertain whether a sufficient fund can be raised for tire following purposes : (a) To provido adequate stipends for such a body of clergy as is demanded for tho spiritual oversight of all tho church people within tho diocese ; (6) to build all requisite churches, parsonages, and schools: (c) to train young men for tho work of the ministry. 2. That a committee be appointed to make all requisite arrangements, to consist of tho Right Rev. tho Bishop and all tho licensed clergy of the diocese, Messrs, t). F Bowles, lion.'C. J. Bharazyn. \V. That should tho canvass of the diocese have shown that tiro proposed scheme is acceptable and practicable, tho Bishop bo requested to .convene a special meeting of tho Synod to con-ider tho whole plans, and to make by act of tho Synod all duo and necessary arrangements, . , ~ Mr. Powbes read the report of the committee on standing orders, and gave notice that ho would move that the standing orders, as recommended by tho committee, be adopted as tho standing orders of the S> M° d ' PiDsnuitT read the report of the Church Chronicle Committee, and gave notice that ho would move tho Synod should resolve itself into a committee to consider the report. Archdeacon Stock's motion for a now standing order was deferred, the new order being included in tho report on standing orders. . Moved by the Rev. W. Ballachev, and seconded by Mr Halcombe.— That a standing committee be appointed, to consist of the Yen. Archdeacon Stock, the Revs. Harvey, Fancomt, Coffey, Hon. .T. C. Pharazyn, Messrs. Clarke, Didsbury, Hunter. Lowo. Powlos, Quick, Boss-Marten, and Colonel Leckie. " the Rev. J. R. Thorpe, seconded by Mr. Halcombe,—That this Synod urges upon the attention of clin ch members in tho diocese tho pressing need that exists at tho present time for clergymen to labor in tho country districts, and tin necessity for taking stops to make the supply of clergymen keep pace with tho rapid increase of population. And. further, that in the opin on of this Synod it is most desirable that one or more studentships In theology be founded for tho pnrposo of assisting in tho preparation of candidates for the ministry.—Carried. T FAKCOURT.-That this Synod do request tho General Synod to authorise tho trustees to soil tho site of the present Sunday School at tho Lower Hutt. with a view to purchase a more convenient site for tho same.—Carried. ... , , , . Coi'PßV,—That the Bill to amend clause IS, Act IV., by substituting the word ‘ curate ' for “vestry." and striking out all words after tho word .<• parishV' to add to clause 12 the following section : -fcl To assist tho curate in keeping a register of all persons who attend the hoiycommuuionin the parish, bo road a lirst time. Moved by Mr. Bowles, and seconded by Captain Hewitt, as an addition to tho lust amendment,— That with a view of promoting an amendment of the New Zealand Education Act, hereby appoints a committee to take such steps on that behalf as may seem to them expedient.
