QUARTERLY LICENSING MEETING

Tuesday, September 3. (Before Commissioners Mansford, B.M. (chairman), Holdsworth, Kebbell, and Moore.) NEW LICENSES. Mr. Spiers applied for a license for a new hotel at Karori. Inspector Atchison said that a licensed house in the neighborhood was not necessary. There was formerly a licensed house there, and since it had been closed there had not been nearly so much drunkenness in the neighborhood. Application refused. Mr. Moody made application for a license for the ICilbirnie Hotel, Evans Bay. Mr. Moorhouse appeared for the applicant, and stated that a licensed house was very much needed in the vicinity. The nearest licensed house in one direction was a mile away, and in the opposite direction four miles. A petition had been signed by nearly everybody residing in the locality in favor pf a licensed house being established. > Mr. Moody said that the house contained four bar parlors or sitting rooms on the ground floor, besides the bar and kitchen. On the upper storey there were twelve bedrooms and a bath-room. The locality was largely patronised by visitors, and the road leading to it was the principal promenade in Wellington. Mr. White, estate-agent, said that tile house was not quite completed. It was one of the best iu Wellington, and the rooms were largo and well lighted. Inspector Atcheson said that the house would not be finished for a month. He considered that a licensed house was not requisite in the neighborhood. Application refused. TRANSFERS.
