FATAL COACH ACCIDENT NEAR MOERAKI.

(PER PRESS AGENCY.)' • v . Dunedin, Tuesday. A fatal accident happened to Goodland’s coach between Palmerston South and Moeraki to-day. Mr. Nicholls, of Dalgety, Nicholls, and Co,, was killed instantaneously. Ernest Maitland, son of Mr. J. P. Maitland, was dangerously injured, and several others were more or less hurt. The coach left at the usual time, taking fifteen passengers aboard, one of whom was a lady. All went well until descending the hill at the Horse Ranges, when the traces of one of the horses came loose. Goddard, a careful driver, who has been on the road for nine years, was. driving, and on the box was a young gentleman named Maitlacd, who tried to put his foot on the brake to assist Goddard, but his foot slipped, and he fell down amongst the horses feet. In falling he knocked Goddard’s foot off the brake, and before Goddard could get his foot on it again the . coach ? got - a great way on, and one of the horses fell; the others took fright, bolted, and dragged the coach and its occupants over a steep embankment. On being picked up Mr. Maitland was found to be fearfully injured, and is not expected to live till raorniug. .Mr. Nicholls, of the firm of Dalgety, Nicholls, & Co. was killed. Goddard, the driver, was very seriously injured, and five of the other passengers were hurt, but none of them dangerously. There is great excitement in town, and when a special train with the dead and injured arrived the platform was crowded. In connection with this sad affair it is remarkable that this was the last day on which the coach was to run, as the new railway lino would be opened to-morrow. The above brief particulars are as correct as can be obtained, but the excitement is so great that it is difficult to obtain correct information.
