THE LATE MR. ALEXANDER REID.
TO THE EDITOR OP THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES, Sir,— As a passenger 'on : board the Taupo, and au old friend of Mr. Alexander Reid, I must protest against the conclusion that his loss was premeditated by himself, or that he jumped overboard in a fit of despondency. Mr. Reid came down with me in the train yesterday afternoon from Christchurch to Lyttelton. We conversed all the way, and afterwards on the steamer had much familiar conversation. Mr. Reid teas in excellent spirits, and spoke eith pleasant anticipation of soon meeting his brother, and other near relations at Auckland. 1 saw him perhaps one of the last on board the ship, and I feel quite assured that if Mr. Reid fell overboard his death was hot of his own seeking.—l am, &c.„ , Eugene O'Conob.
