Gbahamstown, Monday. , At a meeting of the Indian Famine Relief Fund Committee the sum of £l7l was reported as collected and banked, with the probability of more to come in. Besides which, arrangements are in progress for a fete day,
and an organ recital at St. George’s Church. It is estimated that £250 will be raised here. : Napier, Monday. - The Rev. Charles Clark’s lectures are drawing large houses here. He preached in the Wesleyan Church last night in aid of the Indian .Famine Fund to a crowded congregation. The collection amounted to over £53. Gretmodth, Monday. The Dispatch Foundry took fire to-night at seven o’clock near the boiler. The fire speedily communicated with the fitting-room, machineroom, and pattern shop, which were all destroyed. The fire brigade men were promptly on the spot, and saved all other buildings. The amount of damage is not stated. The property was insured for £3OOO, distributed amongst several offices. Christchurch, Monday. The racecourse privileges for the Metropolitan meeting were sold to-day for £4Ol, being a few pounds less than last year; but there were only three publicans’ booths this year, against five last year. Trump Card is a hot favorite at evens for the Derby ; Mata for the Canterbury Jockey Club Handicap at 5 to 1 ; Mata and Oheron are about equal favorites for the Cup at 5 to 1. Betting is very quiet. The weather is again unusually dry, with hot winds, and rain ' is much required for the crops. Contributions to the Famine Fund are still coming in freely. The children attending the East Christchurch District School contributed £36 to the fund. Timaed, Monday. The Belief Committee collected over £421, and a considerable amount is still promised to be collected. The Timaru races are announced for March 14 and 15. Splendid sheep are coming from the country for to-morrow’s show. The weather is beautiful Dr. Waring, an old resident at Waimate, expired yesterday. His death was caused by an apoplectic fit. Dunedin, Monday. The report of the Commission on the High School will be forwarded to Wellington about the end of the week.. Another prosecution for breach of Bradshaw's Factory Act will shortly come before the Police Court. The case of Pritchard v. the Corporation of Dunedin, in which the jury was discharged a short time ago without having come to a verdict, will be heard at Invercargill on December 16. Some leading Koslyn electors who assisted to return Mr. Burns have refused to sign a requisition calling on him to resign. Information has been received in town that Mr. Borrie, of Papakai, brother of Mr. Borrie of the Custom House, Dunedin, has been killed by a buggy accident. The Master Builders’ Association has resolved to give the Saturday half-holiday three .mouths’ trial. One half the proceeds of the performance of the Chicago Minstrels at the Princess Theatre to-night is to be given to the Indian Famine Relief Fund.
