A fire at midnight destroyed a house at Paruell owned by Mr. Gisborne, M.H.E. It was occupied by Mr. Wilson. The building was insured for £2OO in the London and Liverpool, and the furniture for £IOO in the South. British. There being no water, the fire burned itself out. ~„„■«» . The Supreme Court suspended H. S. Meyer s certificate for two years. The Bank of New South Wales, representing one other creditor besides itself, was the only opposing creditor, the others having agreed to a discharge. Moyle, late landlord of the Wharf Dining Rooms, attempted suicide by hanging. His daughter, twelve years old, cut him down, and ran for assistance. He was unconscious, but was not seriously injured. He had been drinking. Timabu, Friday.
At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce this afternoon a motion was carried ■ recommending the Government to erect a new Post Office in the centre of the town. A motion was tabled for the appointment of a marine surveyor for the port of Timaru. Christchubch, Friday.
The master of the Lunatic Asylum obtained a small printing plant some years ago for the amusement and instruction of patients, and has now commenced the publication of a small monthly paper containing asylum news and other matter. A public meeting was held this afternoon to consider what steps should be taken respecting the Indian Famine Belief Fund. There was a large attendance, the Mayor in the chair. Sir C. Wilson, the Dean of Christchurch, Mr. Gould, and Mr. Ollivier, were the principal speakers. A large committee was appointed to collect subscriptions. It was resolved to try to get a Bpecial offertory in all the churches throughout the province on Sunday evening. A subscription list was opened, and £4OO was promised in the rosm. j .
