RUSSIAN HEADQUARTERS REMOVED TO SISTOVA. London, October i. Mdlle. Tjtiens is dead. The inquiry into the Avalanche collision is proceeding. London, October 6. The bank rate is four per cent, and there are heavy withdrawals of gold. Colonial bonds are half per cent lower. Combing wool is firmer. Clothing unsteady and trade depressed. A Turkish official despatch reports a great battle in Asia Minor, with favorable result to the Turks. A Russian unofficial despatch states that on the 2nd inst. the Russians captured the entrenchments near Kars, on Mukhtar Pasha's left, repulsing large masses of the Turks, but subsequently abandoned them owing to want of water. The Russian loss is estimated at 83 officers and 3200 men. The Turkish loss 13 said to be enormous. A Turkish official despatch from Mukhtar Pasha reports a complete victory on the 2nd inst. The Russians attacked the whole line, but were compelled to retire. The Turks pursued them to Opaikai.
The Russian los3 was 5000; the Turkish unknown.
Other accounts say that the result of the battle is indecisive.
The Czar has resolved to remain with the army until the war is ended. There is much sickness amongst the Russians round Plevna.
The Turks are not answering the bombardment.
Operations at Shipka are stopped by fog.
A Russian unofficial despatch states that the Turkish left, supporting the garrison at Kara, attacked the Russian right on the 4th, but were defeated with great loss. Sulieman Pasha has been appointed Com-mander-in-Chief on the Danube. Mehemet Ali is recalled. Rauouf Pasha commands in the Balkans.
The Russian headquarters are removed to Sistova. Arrived : Kent.
[The Government have received the following tele' gram from the Agent-General:—] London, October 6.
Great chauges have taken place in the command of both armies. General Kotzebue is chief of the Russian Btaff. General Todleben commands the seige operations at Plevna. Mehemet Ali has been removed, and the chief command has been given to Sulieman Pasha. Raouf Pasha commands in the Shipka Pass. ¥ Nothing decisive in the way of fighting has taken place for a fortnight, but a prolonged though undecided battle is proceeding at Kars.
The Russians are making complete rations for a winter campaign.
