Auckland, Monday. The Acclimatisation Society received the first shipment of Californian quail from Mr. Thomas Russell. Several thousand are expected to follow. Gbahamstown, Monday. The Rev. Charles Clark has been most successful here. He delivered four lectures, each of which was attended by a large audience. He left yesterday for Auckland. Wheatleigh opens here in the “ Shaughraun” to-night. Kdmara, Monday. Willliam John Galvin, Mary Downie, James William Haniels, and John Gilman were examined to-day. There is no doubt as to the identity of the body and the commission of a foul murder. There is nothing to connect the prisoner with it as yet. More than a dozen witnesses for the prosecution are yet to be examined. Nelson, Monday. Mr. Mabin has sold by auction the corner section of Trafalgar and Hardy streets for £1950. Mr. Dodson was the purchaser for the Colonial Bank. Christchurch, Monday. The cricket season opened on Saturday. Dr. Campbell advertises that he has withdrawn from the hospital staff. An official inquiry is to be undertaken at his request. The Archery Club opened its season on Saturday. There was a large attendance. Prize for ladies’ highest score was won by Mrs. Oowlishaw ; for gentlemen, by H. Brittan. The effects of the long - continued dry weather are beginning to be injuriously felt in the agricultural districts. W. -J. Mahoney, convicted of type stealing, was sentenced to-day to six months’ imprisonment.
The prospectus of the proposed Alliance Insurance Company has not yet appeared. Dunedin, Monday.
It is stated in the Times to-day that -applications for shares in the National Mortgage and Agency Company are largely in excess of New Zealand’s issue.
John Gately, the lad convicted of rape on a young girl at Otakaia, received twenty-five lashes with the .cat-o’-nine-tails this morning. He howled terribly. Hk next flagellation will be given four weeks hence. Balcliitha, Monday.
Bight draughts and five thoroughbreds were paraded at the walking show. The entries comprised some really fine animals. There was a large attendance of settlers.
AUSTRALIAN SUMMARY. (PEB ALBION, AT HOKITIKA.) Melbourne, October 2. Another petition has been presented against the return of Macartney for South Gipps Land. The Chimborazo made a passage of fortyane days. Judgment has been delivered in the case of Macartney v. Macartney, The charge against the captain of the ship Macduff for neglect was dismissed. The other news is unimportant. October 3. At the preliminary meeting' for the India famine Relief fund, held yesterday, the Governor being present, £2BOO was subscribed, including £2OOO given by Mr. W. J. Clarke. Several gentlemen gave £IOO each. The movement is being warmly supported. The Tararua left here last Wednesday for the Bluff, but broke down on Thursday near Wilson’s Promontory, and was towed back on Saturday morning by the Claud Hamilton, which picked her up. She had her crank shaft broken. The passengers all follow tomorrow per Claud Hamilton. An old man, 77 years of age, named Arnold, was murdered on Saturday evening by a young man named Black, who, after brutally kicking him, cut his head open with a billhook. The murderer is in custody. A considerable quantity of rain has fallen, and the country is looking splendid. Business is improving. Mr. Charles Pope, tragedian, visits New Zealand shortly.
