(PER PRESS AGENCY.) Auckland, Monday. A South British Insurance cablegram states, that the company has a full line on the Avalanche. This means either £SOOO or £7OOO. A New' Zealand Insurance cablegram saysthat the vessel sank in deep water. Losses will be total Dr. Skae is inspecting the quarantine station to see if it is suitable for a temporary lunatic asylum, the present location being wholly unsuitable and dangerous. A proposal has been, made to lodge the lunatics in Government House. Gkahamstown, Monday. _To Moananui, a well known Thames chief, died at Parawai early this morning. There will be a great tangi. Deceased was priucipally opposed to opening Ohiaemuri, Tadpo, Monday. A proclamation of the Maori King is being promulgated, setting forth that the end of the world and of the pakeha will come to pass in eighteen months from the 10th October next. The King’s messengers are conveying this intelligence to his subjects throughout the island. Napier, Monday. George Donnelly, formerly manager of Maney’s station, Korokipo, was to-day committed for t. ial on a charge of stealing four horses, the property of Mr. Maney. There are two more charges against him. The Waiapu Diocesan Synod opened this, afternoon. Christchurch, Monday. The Press Club, which has been in a languishing state for a long time, is to be wound up. Captain O. H. Wilson, an old settler, was found dead in his bed this morning. The cause of death was apoplexy. Ddnedin, Saturday. A meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was held to-day to consider the following telegram received from Mr. Vincent Pyke :—“ McLean, is doing bis utmost in the House, in committee, in lobbies, Bellamy’s, and Cabinet to obstruct construction of Strath Taieri railway. Havemajority, but McLean throws difficulties in the way of division. Can any influence be brought to bear.”—The following resolution was carried :—“That the Chamber having heard with great regret that the Hon.- G. McLean is using his influence to prevent the construction of the Strath Taieri railway, resolves that members of the House of Representatives, including those who are members of the Government, be asked to use their utmost efforts to secure the immediate construction of the Strath Taieri line.”—Mr. John Cargill proposed, and Mr. Henry Driver seconded,. “ That this Chamber having learned with regret and disgust that the Hon. George McLean is opposing the construction of the central Otago railway, desire to express the hope that the other members will disregard his mischievous efforts.”—This was withdrawn. Monday. The criminal sessions commence here next Monday. The calendar comprises—2 cases of rape, 1 of attempted rape,-! of embezzlement, 3 of manslaughter, 1 of larceny, 2 of cattle stealing, 2 of maliciously killing, 3 of cutting and wounding, 1 of attempted suicide, and 1 of libel. _■
