LATEST WAR NEWS. (REUTER’S SPECIAL TO PRESS AGENCY.) [The following telegrams were issued by the New Zealand Times yesterday afternoon] London, September 17. A Turkish official despatch states that Sulieman Pasha on the 16th inst. captured Fort Nicholas, at the Shipka Pass. The army of the Tsarewich, on the line of the Jantra, has been strongly reinforced, and a great battle with Mehemet Ali is believed to be imminent. The Russian army iu Poland has been ordered to Bulgaria. The Germans guard the frontier. General Todleben is planning a winter campaign. Matchin, Hirsova, Sistova, Nicopolis, and Bosnia are all iu a state of seige. September 18. The bombardment of Plevna continues. General Chevnet is marching to the relief of the defenders of Plevna. The Russians at the Shipka Pass have been reinforced. September 20. Bismarck and Andrassy conferred together for four hours. A semi-official correspondence published in Berlin, indicates that the object of the conference is to consider what steps could be taken towards restoring peace. A Herald special says it is reported that Sulieman Pasha has effected a junction with Mehemet Ali, whose combined forces are expected to attack the Tsarewich at Biela. The Russian staff has been censured for refusing reinforcements to Skobeloff, whose division was nearly annihilated. The total loss at Plevna was thirteen tho isand Russians and three thousand Roumanians. The Montenegrins have captured Bilefc. Bombay, September 21. The Daily News correspondent says the Russian attack on Plevna has been abandoned. A Turkish official despatch reports that Mehemet Ali is slowing advancing on the right bank of Banikolini towards Kopria, twelve miles south of Biela, where the Russians are massing their forces. News from Stamboul states that the Porte refuses mediation while a single Russian remains iu Turkey, and will not agree to an armistice, unless concurrent with peace proposals. The blockade and bombardment of Plevna continues. A report from a reliable source says the interview at Saltzburg (the sequel of the meeting at Ischl), strengthens the complete understanding between the three Emperors. It is reported that Mehemet Ali has gained a complete victory at Biela, and that there was great loss on the part of the Russians. LATEST EUROPEAN NEWS. London, September 20. MacMahon has issued a proclamation which asserts that he serves no party ; but will maintain the Constitution, whatever may be the result of the elections. He will maintain dependent Conservative interests with the help of the Senate. September 22. MacMahon’s manifesto has caused uneasiness. The Republicans are indignant, and have issued a counter manifesto. SAFETY OF STANLEY. London, September 20. Stanley has crossed Africa and arrived at the West Coast.
