At the Resident Magistrate’s Court to-day, the man John Chalker was convicted of having in his possession a still and other apparatus suitable for distilling purposes, and sentenced to eight months’ imprisonment. The plant was discovered by the police and the SubCollector of Customs iu-Chalker's house, which is situated on a farm leased by him at Inch Olmer from the Hon. M. Holmes. A large meeting of ladies was held to-day and passed resolutions establishing a Ladies Benevolent Society. The matter has been taken up very heartily, aud will be well carried through. A project is on foot for starting a Working Men's Club on similar principles to that of the Dunedin and Wellington Clubs. The weather was exceedingly cold on Saturday and Sunday.
