The Herald’s special correspondent says : Mehemet reports' Colonel Baker greatly distinguishing himself in recent battles, but is reported missing. Two horses were shot dead under him. Lieutenant-General Radetzky, commanding at Shipka Pass, is in danger, being surrounded, and water and food failing. Turkish reinforcements are arriving from Adrianople. The Russian Imperial Guards are arriving at Bucharest. Prince Charles takes command of the RussoRoumanian corps, with General Sotoff as chief of-bis staff. THE TURKISH VICTORIES CONFIRMED. FIGHTING TO THE EAST OF PLEVNA. THE RUSSIANS DEFEATED AND THREE REDOUBTS TAKEN. BRAVERY OF EX-COLONEL BAKER. Bombay, September 2, 3.16 p.m. The news of Mehemet All’s victory is fully confirmed. There is a great movement of the Turks towards Papkoi Kediski. A despatch from Isman, dated August 31st, states that the Turks made a reconnaisance in force of the Russian position east of Plevua. They attacked and routed the enemy, who were 30,000 strong, after severe fighting. Three Russian redoubts were carried by assault, Ex-Colonel Valentine Baker greatly distinguished himself in the fighting on the 30th. THE FIGHTING AT SHIPKA PASS. [The following telegram has been received from the Agent-General, and was published by the New Zealand Times as an Extra yesterday afternoon.] London, August 31, 6.40 p.m. After furious fighting at the Shipka Pass, and immense losses on both sides, the Russians retain possession of their positions. Sulieman Pasha is trying to surround the Russians, to destroy their lines of communication, and to prevent their retreat to Gabrova. Both sides have received large reinforcements, and Servia is expected to join in the, war. Greece is holding back. Germany, supported by the other Powers, complained to Turkey of the treatment of prisoners by her troops. The present is commonly regarded as a period of suspense, but decisive action is shortly anticipated. The Bank rate of discount has been raised to 3 per cent.
