GREYTOWN.
(FKOU OUB OWN CORRESPONDENT.) The Wairarapa Pastoral Association Committee never appears to know for certain where the shows are to be held, and disputes are always arising as to the best place. At one time it was decided to hold them permanently at Tauherenikan; but the Masterton members are now, after a more mature consideration, objecting to such an arrangement on the "round that the distance is too great if the weather is at all inclement. A meeting was held in Greytown for the purpose of coming to some understanding; but while so much jealousy exists between the different townships, an understanding will never be ai rived at on questions peitaiuiug to the good of the whole district. The consequence is that the Wairarapa will never rank very high for its pastoral shows or any other objects of a general nature. The Wairarapa Lake has been higher the last week than for many years past, thousands of acres being inundated. For many years it was the cry of the settlers of that part of the valley for arrangements to be made with the Maoris to allow them to open the lake whenever it should be closed. Their cry was at last heard, and Mr. Maunsell, after offering the Maoris a goodly sum, got their consent to it being opened when necessary. The reason of the landowners interested not taking advantage of this arrangement, can only be explained that two or three have to pay all the costs, and the rest to have the advantage without being at any expense. If a special rate were levied on all the property likely to be flooded, and expended by a board, the lake might be always opened without any disputes arising as to who should pay for it.
