STREET NOMENCLATURE.

TO THE BDITOU OF THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sib, —The reasons given by your correspondents for abolishing the name of Lambtonquay are the very reasons why it ought to be carefully preserved. If the name is altered to anything so meaningless ns Waterloo, Gladstone, or Stafford street, how are future generations to know that the shops in that thoroughfare once had a water frontage ? Is it not a subject of interest to Londoners that the names of Cheapside, and the Strand, and London Wall should recall memories of what London once was? And the same principle holds good here. When once a name becomes strikingly inappropriate from the march of events then it ought to be jealously maintained as the one changeless element in a changing scene. It is a link to unite the future with the rapidly receding past, _ and ought to be regarded as historic, and not liable to capricious alteration. I hope what I have said may help to give the name of Lambton-quay some interest in the eyes of your readers.—l am, &c., J. G,
