INTERPROVINCIAL CRICKET MATCH.

BY TELEGRAPH. Christchurch,, Friday. The game was resumed to-day. Glorious weather, and the ground in beautiful order. There was a large attendance,, and the sup. porters of Otago believed their team could pull off the match ;, but the result was widely different, Canterbury giving their opponents a tremendous thrashing. .. . _ At twenty-five minutes to one o’clock Meares and Cargill, the two not-outs, appeared at the wickets,. Ashby and Sweet bowling. Both the bowlers were well on the spot, and the batsmen could do little more than defend their wickets. Each bowler commenced with a maiden. Cargill played above the first ball of Sweet’s second; over, and lost his leg stump. 2-1-0. Reade next appeared, and runs came by singles very slowly. The bowling was splendid, and the batsmen afraid to take liberties with it. At one time Sweet bowled five maidens in succession. When the score had reached 17, Reade played forward at a ball from Ashby, missed it, and was beautifully stumped by E. Fowler.- 17-2-5. At twenty minutes past one-Rose joined Meares, but the partnership was very brief. Sweet’s first ball, a yorker, sent Meares’ bails flying; 17-3-10; and Otago beginning to look very glum.’ Paramour, captain of the Otago team, came forward amid hearty applause, and a general wish that he might do better than on the first day. He played rather wildly at his first ball, and evidently meant slogging, but the field was too lively, -and the bowling too good for rapid scoring. Ashby equalled Sweet’s performance by bowling five maidens in succession. At 1.30 an adjournment was made for luncheon, the score standing at 24. Play was resumed at 2.30, and in Sweet’s second over he bowled the only wide of the day, but atoned for It with the next ball, which lowered two of Paramour’s stumps. The great hope of Otago thus retired with only 9 runs to his credit. 27-4-9. Bouche filled the vacancy, and showed good defence, with free-hitting powers. Rose also played well. The two were making a good stand, the score going slowly but surely up. Neilson was put on to bowl slows at Ashby’s end, in the hope of dissolving the partnership, but for a time, they were severely punished, and the failing hopes of Otago were revived. • The score mounted rapidly to '49, when Bouche was clean bowled by Sweet. The end was now fast approaching. Clarke, who joined Rose, made a fine drive for 3 off Sweet, but the first ball from Neilson scattered his bails. 52-6-2. Morrison now faced the slows, and made a good drive to off for 3. A maiden to Sweet followed, Morrison not seeming to relish the pace. Neilson bowled a inaiden. Rose cut Sweet for asingle, but inNeilson’s next over Rose turned to drive a ball to leg, and allowed it to roll off his arm onto the wickets, thus retiring for 8 runs. 58-7-8. Nicholls came to the vacant wicket and drove the first ball for a single. Morrison ran out to a tempting one from Neilson,, missed it, and was neatly stumped by Fowler. His contribution was 5 ; the game now standing 60-8-5. Millington faced Nicholls, whose turn had now come. He ran out to the first’ball from Neilson, missed it, and lost his middle stump, Neilson thus getting three wickets in one over. 60-9-0. Rhodes, the last hope of Otago, now came in. Sweet bowled a maiden and Millington scored a single ; Rhodes played Neilson’s first ball very carefully into Ollivier’s hands at short leg, and thus finished the game, at 3.43, for the very small total of 61 runs. Canterbury thus wins by 150 runs. Out of the 61 overs bowled by Sweet and Ashby 36 were maidens. The following is the full score. OTAGO—SECOND INNINGS.
