Mr. Broomhall has accepted the last condiI tions offered by the Land Board. Returns furnished by the relieving-officer show that 268 adults are in receipt of relief >in Auckland. This includes old women and ■women in Refuge. | A well at Seccombe’s brewery, which supplied the town when the Domain water supply fell off, collapsed last" night. The debris has- completely filled up the well, burying gear and machinery. The damage is estimated at £IOOO. The Star states on the authority of the Attorney-General that where the Counties Act is not brought fully into operation, or no rate levied, a subsidy on the basis of a total amount of rates collected by the Highway Districts in the County will still be payable. Where the permissive clauses of the Counties Act are suspended, the County subsidies will be paid direct to Highway Boards. ’ Alexandra, Friday. At a meeting of the County Council to-day it was resolved unanimously that the chairman should communicate with the Government respecting the late outrage by the King natives at Poringia, asking that the proprietor of the land should be protected in peaceful occupation of his property, and that immediate steps should be taken . to proteot the inhabitants of the county in the neighborhood.,of Poringia. Further, that if a satisfactory reply is not received -within a reasonable time, the chairman be requested to confer with the chairmen of the Waikato, Piako, and Raglan Counties, with a view of holding a public meeting on the subject,. Blenheim, Friday. The execution of Woodgate has been fixed for eight o’clock on Wednesday morning at Pioton. Nelson, Friday, The protest against the Eclipse, winner of the Junior Four-oared Race, has been disallowed. After hearing the protest entered by the owners of the yacht Secret, the committee decided that the race should be ran over again,
but Richardson, the owner of the Gannet, declined, on the grounds that he has fairly won, and has served a notice on the treasurer, holding him responsible for the money and the cup. All the money won by the visitors was paid to them last night, excepting that in the protested races. The Wellington Rowing Club took_ away £246 and the silver cup. Christchurch, Fr r - The ISTew Zealand Wesleyan Con assembled at Durham-street Church last, , when the Rev. W. Kirk, of Auckland, was elected President. The Rev. A. Reid, the retiring President, delivered a very able address. „ Dunedin, Friday. Representatives from the Times, Guardian and Star, also Captain Hutton, are amongst the passengers per Wanaka on her excursion round the Middle Island. Thirty passengers are also booked at the several coast ports, in addition to the party from Dunedin. The Peninsula County Council met in Dunedin to-day. It was resolved not to bring the whole of the Act into operation, but to leave the matter to the Road Boards. Balclctha, Friday. The Horticultural Society’s show to-day was quite a success. Flowers, plants, fruits, and vegetables were well represented. The entries were numerous, and there were a large number of visitors throughout the afternoon.
