MR. MILLS IN EXPLANATION.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sir, —I was very much surprised this morning, on reading the report of yesterday’s meeting of the City Council, to find words imputed to me that I did hot use, nor did my remarks refer to the public meeting at all. I was not present at it, nor do I know who was. The remarks I made were to the following effect;—“ It is being constantly thrown in our teeth that we have an overdraft of £14,000 or £15,000, and consequently we should nofr spend money on the Town. Hall. I consider it fortunate that we have been enabled to get such an overdraft, and I doubt much whether if those who are causing the agitation were in our place they could secure an over--draft at all." I may add that my reason for stating I did! not consider the public meeting a fair expression of the ratepayers’ opinion was from the fact that the matter was not discussed, the statements being all on one side. Apologising for troubling you—l am, &c., E. W. Mills. Wellington, January 19. ' [lt is much to be regretted that Mr. Mills was misrepresented; but we have no doubt the letter above will set him right with the burgesses. At the same time it is but fair to ” state that there was a good deal of confusion at the Council table while Mr. Mills was speaking, and it was difficult to catch his words.— Ed. N.Z. Times.]
