MUNICIPAL MUDDLING.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sir, —You doaeiwe great credit* for so persistently drawing attention to the sanitary deficiencies of Wellington, which w© greater/and with less cause, hast any other town in' New Zealand. For all tins we have our City Council entirely to blame, who most" culpably deny-thes 'citizens here the chance of keeping their premises clean .If they would. In other large the rubbish of householders is collected every morning and taken away,. and the waterclosets cleaned out once a week.’ Instead of this;; here the debris of a household is obliged to be kept for a week at least in-the back yard, while the scraps of meat, bones, cabbage leaves, potatoes, fish entrails, etc., etc., lie, putrid in the sun, breeding disease and death; yet if -taken-away when fresh, would answer admirably for feeding' fowls, &c., instead of remaining to' become a sweltering mass of filth. With regard ix> waterclosets, with' our miserable driblet of a water supply, Uis imperative that these should be emptied often instead of accumulating, or being run into I drains; And it is a disgrace!to the authorities that such as the Bigbug Hotel should be allowed td’have- a monopoly of wasting, our scanty water supply by running its filth into the harbor. I know that it is like whistling jigs to a milestone to appeal to ,the' ; City. Council in the matter; Filth may accumulate, and drains thus become a fruitful source of fever and diphtheria: the doathrate may become double what it need be, but somehow instead, of grappling.with the evil,- the .City Council seem more at home voting £IO,OOO for a Town-hall, and something more for an organ; and When these are procured our municipal magnates will appear as dignified as an African potentate in fuli dress.—l am, Ac., , % *• • Citizen.
