SWIMMING MATCHES.
The swimming matches in connection with, the Wellington: Athletic Club took .‘place; as advertised, at the Tho'mddh baths oh Saturday afternoon. The' weather was beautifully, fine, and the water smooth. There was a very good attendance, a,number of ladies being present. Competitors dressed on the old Bambler, which was moored outside the fence on the sea side,' opposite the .platform, from which a spring-board was run out. Mr. Gair-fondly acted as judge, and performed the duties of that office most efficiently., , The first event on the programme was a Bovs* Bace (under 16), 75 Yards.-First Prize, 20s. : ' Second Prize, ss. Butts, G. (bine) Carpenter, (pink & blue) : Clayton, L. (white) . Wylie, white) Atkinson, J. (red) ' Rowlands, R. (pink) ; • it was a capital race, especially betweenCarpenter .and Butts. The latter was the smallest .of the I competitors, but swam splendidly,. and gave; Carpenter, who came in first, all be could do to win. - ' . Diviitd Longest , Distances.—First Prize, 20s. Barrels - .Word placed in the’ water, with pieces of board , - fastened to : the ends, these pieces' being. possibly for the purpose of .holding on by should a seat be fairly obtained, or perhaps they were supposed to'represent horses’ heads.' It was certainly the most entertaining' / event on the programn'e, and caused great amusement. Thfe .competitors found it impossible to get on the barrels, at least . they failed to'remain on t"hem even for a few seconds when they succeeded in getting on top; A boy named Cleland was awarded the prize, he having fucdeeded in mounting one of and.retaining his seat for a little time.
