■WELLINGTON C.C. v. H.MS.iSAPPHIRE.. A match between the above, elevens -was ■ played on Saturday afternoon bn the Basin Reserve; and resulted,'"as will be sfeh .by the scores below, in a decided victory fqr the Wellington Club. With commendable punctuality, several of the leading players of, ihe. W. 0.0. turned up about an hour after the appointed tube for starting. The Sapphire men were on the,- ground punctual to 1 time, and, it showed but scant courtesy that their opponents' should have kept them so lohg waiting. The Wellington; men are proverbial for this sort of thing, and the sooner they get out of this had habit thejbetter. The match was decidedly a onesided affair, the Wellington men .haying it all; their own way.,, Several of the .Sapphire men allowed that at due time they had hanalod the willow, but want of practice told .considerably; against them. ' The sam e may bo sal /of the bowling. The fielding of the blue jackets, was very fair, taking.all- things-.into .consideration.■■ What they lacked in. science they-made up for by perseverance, for they worked'well and willingly together., With, three /exceptions,,, the; Wellington men made double figures, Lillie being top scorer, /with- 27m ,to his name, the others close.up. .-Bryce’s bowling was' very distinctive r-to the man-o’ -war’s .men and was the principal cause of their speedy exit; Dr. Bromlow captained the Sapphire team, and; Mr. Bell the Wellington .Mr. Dennys acted as scorer for-the. former and,Mr. Bate forthe latter., The umpires were Mr. J. A. Salmon and Mr. Bromley. : Next Saturday thel return match between the Wellington Cricket Club and the Star Cricket Club wiU probably. take 'place.
