CHRISTCHURCH RACES.
(BT TBLEGRAFB.) FBOM THE PRESS AGENCY. The Metropolitan Meeting opened to-day. The weather was cold and wet during the first two races, but then cleared up. There was a moderate attendance. The racing was good. The favorites were beaten in every race, and the bookmakers made a pot of money. The Free Handicap was considered almost a certainty for Titania; being well in the C.J.O. was thought not likely to go for the handicap. Titania was beaten off from the moment the flag fell, which astonished the knowingones, who from her training gallops had expected great things of her. For the last three months she had been in splendid form, and latterly scarcely any _ odds could be obtained against her in the race; She appeared out of all form, but recovered herself a little in the latter part, and raced with rear guard, being only beaten on the post by Ngaro for third place. Ngaro’s chance a few days ago was considered good for this year, but ha went amiss on Monday. Isaac Walton, from his bolting propensities, was never thought dangerous, but he ran well. More money would have ibeen entrusted to Tadmur if he had been considered likely to start. The general idea, was he would never run for so little money, but would be saved for the Canterbury Jockey
Club Cup. He ran splendidly all through, and came in a good first, hard held. For many months the Derby has been considered a moral for Danebury or Dead Heat, and very little /odds could be obtained against them. Odds were freely offered until yesterday against Fanny Fisher colt, Fallacy, and Songster. The backers were nearly all sweet on Danebury and Dead Heat Songster was scarcely backed at all. Redwood’s Purirl was a great favorite for a It g time after the entries were made, and wit. he came down here he continued to gtow in favor until a week ago, when he began to do very little work, and then fell out of the batting. Danebury, from being the winner of the Champagne Stakes, was considered a very good thing; but as he belonged to the same owner as Fallacy; and Nosworthy, thinking from" the trials the horsa_ had a better chance with the latter, he scratched Danebury, which was a sore disappointment to many. Fallacy ran. well for a mile, pulling hard, and looking all over a winner, but did not answer when called upon inside the distance post. Songster being nearly related to such a bad lot as the descendants of Sky bird, was never thought ’to be in the race, but contrary to expectation, she landed the first Derby any of the family ever won. The Fanny Fisher colt having showed* off hie bolting propensity lately, went up rapidly in the betting, and Danebury beinghe started a first favorite, Fallacy being very little inquired for. The Railway Plate being only a spurt for the fast ones, Guy Fawkes, Puugawerewere, and Danebury, the latter of Which had been saved for it, were freely backed. Mangle was also backed, but Mattock, having Ranolf disabled, had nothing to spurt Mangle with; therefore the latter had but little work. If worked,'there can be no doubt Mangle baa a good turn of speed, and will some day give a good account of himself. Mangle stuck well to Danehury till they reached the distance post.„ Guy Fawkes was very unfortunate at starting; the way he picked up in the lattes part of the race was a treat to witness, Puugawerewere, who also had a bad start, was never in the race. The C.J.C. Handicap, from the weights being published, was considered to be entirely between the three year olds. Ngaro, Tadmor, and Rob Roy were considered well in among the old horses ; Maroro was reckoned the best of the youngsters. Templeton and Guy Fawkes, from their being heavy, imposts, were looked on as completely out of the race. Fishhook and Ariel had a few friends, the latter having come up in the betting very much ia the last day or two. Isaac Walton, after , his defeat in the Free Handicap, was not much thought of, and until this week Maroro could have been backed for any amount. Neotar carried little money, and if she had not broken down in the last quarter mile would have given a good account of herself. Except Guy and Templeton none of the horses were ridden out much after the distance post, nearly all of them pulling up. Guy Fawkes ran splendidly; Templeton went as game as ever, but it ia rumored he split one of his hoofs in; the latter part of the race. Druid’s tip for the Cup is Danebury or Guy Fawkes, the former for choice. FREE HANDICAP Of 60 sovs, added to a sweepstakes of 5 sots. One mile. Ray’s Tadmor, syrs, Bst. 131bs. A good start was effected, Tadmor going away with the lead at a hot pace, Isaac and Ngaro close up, Tikina getting a bad start. In this order they ran until the turn, when Tadmor began to get away from Isaac and Ngaro; and in the straghf it was plain to be seen that it was all over, bar accidents,-French touched up Isaac with the whip bone, but it was no good, and Tadmor scored the first victory of the day by three lengths. Middleton’s Wrangler, Titaaia, Lady of the Lake, Danebury, and Lady Lea were scratched. There was a good start, though Fanny Fisher was about a length in the rear. After going a few hundred yards. Fallacy went up to the front, and for a short distance led by half a length. When about a third of the distance had been gone over Dead Heat bolted, and was never afterwards in the race. Half way round Fallacy was still leading, with the Fisher colt second, and Songster close on their haunches. All three riders commenced with the whip, and in the course of the next hundred yards they were racing neck and neck. Coming round for the bourne’ they were all together, and a splendid race ensued. Songster and the colt put on a fine spurt, and Fallacy fell behind, amid cries of “ It’s Songster’s race!” A magnificent race ensued between the two, but when within a hundred yards of the post Songster drew away and came in a winner by about a length. Fallacy raced hard for second place, but never overtook the colt, which beat her by two lengths. Time, 2min. 52Jsac. RAILWAY PLATE, 100 sovs., weight for age. Half mils. Guy lost at least six lengths ; Mangle and the Danebury cut out running with Puugawerewere and Guy; when coming into the straight run Danebury began to come away, and soon took the lead. Puugawerewere tried to come, but it was no use. Guy came up splendidly and ran into the second place. Danebury came in a winner by a length, Guy Fawkes second. Mangle third. When the jot at last got away, Templeton went off with the-lead. Cloth of Gold second, and the rest in a duster. In this order they . passed the stand. - At the far side Templeton and the Cloth were still going first and second, .with Ariel close up. Guy now began to come up, and on the .turn into the straight he collared Templeton. These two were separated by three lengths from the rear division, and a fine race ensued down the straight, the old horse doing all he could to beat Guy, but the latter came away a winner by half a length ; rest nowhere.
