THE RACES SETTLING NIGHT.

The settling over the late races took place at the Empire Hotel on Saturday evening. There was a good attendance of stewards and also of racing men, George Hunter, Esq., occupying the chair. Mr. Redwood is the highest winner, taking nearly half the stakes ; and we are very glad to see that honest old sportsman, Mr. Walker, coming in for the second largest Bum. Mr. Delamaine has been very unfortunate, and the sum he takes will not recoup him the expenses of his trip, Still, we hope to see him again, and that next year his game Templeton, or a better if he has it, will carry the white and blue to the front in some of the principal events. Cheques were handed over for the following amounts :

Champagne was placed on the table and a few toasts were proposed, and things passed off well. Everyone expressed the greatest satisfaction at the manner in which the meeting has been managed, nor could they well do otherwise. The stewards have done their duty faithfully and well. Bad weather and other difficulties have presented themselves, but by sheer hard work and by a display of liberality they were circumvented, and on the whole there is much reason for surprise that failure shouldhavebeenaverted.Pastsuccessaugurswell for the future, and it only requires a little encouragement and help from the public to make the Wellington Races one of the best meetings in New Zealand. Were * increased support to be afforded to the club, something "big" might be offered to attract owners, but even as things are, we hope to see next programme issued in good time, and that the stewards will remember that early nominations, with .a small fee, and late declarations of weights, is the kind of management to obtain large fields, and, these secured, success is certain. It may be stated that the stewards decided on Saturday night to grant a sum from the club funds in aid of young Osborne, the jockey who met with a mishap when riding Voltaire in the Hutt Park Stakes. An appeal is made to the public for assistance, and Mr. George, treasurer of the club, will be happy to receive subscriptions. It is a very deserving case. The boy has always been a very steady good lad, and is entirely friendless. Therefore we trust the public will liberally respond ; and as for those connected with the profession, surely nothing need be said to induce them to give aid to the fund.
