In distributing grammar school prizes, Sir George Grey made a very eloquent speech, advocating culture of the mind on the ground that men were more actuated by their feeling than their reason. The water is still eighteen inches deep on one part of the Mercer railway, but it is falling. The C'olima has sailed. Wanoanui, Saturday. Mr. Ballance's meeting at Marton last night was most enthusiastic. The hall was crowded to excess, and he wa3 frequently interrupted by applause. He spoke for two hours, and at the conclusion received a unanimous vote of confidence. It was proposed by Mcßeth, seconded, by Manders, and carried amidst cheers. At Bull's he was also successful on the previous night, the meeting being all in his favor. Gbahamstown, Saturday, The nomination for the Thames is fixed for the 29th December ; polling, January 6. A rumor that Sir George Grey will stand for the Thames and City West is received with disfavor. Mr. Maedonald, the new candidate for the Thames, is an out-and-out abolitionist. It is stated that Mr. Sheehan will contest the Thames in the provincial interest, and that Sir George Grey will not stand. The gold returns this week are under a thousand ounces. Tauranga, Sunday. Morris addressed the electors last night, and received a vote of confidence. He will certainly run Kelly very close. Patea, Saturday. The Egmont election will be contested. Mr. Ivess has been requested to stand, and has consented. The committee have guaranteed the expenses of the contest.
