Several letters to the editor are in type, and shall have early insertion. The nomination of candidates for the city takes place at the Resident Magistrate's Court at noon to-day ; for the country district, tomorrow, at noon, at Kaiwarra; and for the Hutt, at noon on Wednesday. The annual distribution of prizes at Wellington College will take place this afternoon. His Excellency the Governor will be present. Mr. Gisbornewrites to us as follows: —As the letter of your correspondent, "Incredulous" may, if"uncontradicted, throw doubt on the bona fide character of the resignation of my office,—as publicly stated by me, —I beg to state that I have never tried, and that I have no' intention to try, to withdraw that resignation.' ' Yesterday, at St. Paul's Church, Mr. Sheriff, of Wanganui, who has for some time past sfficiated as a deacon, was admitted to the order of priests by Bishop Hadfield. The Ven. Archdeacon Stock subsequently preached. A maa named William AUdridge was killed at Palmerston, on Saturday. The telegram received in town announcing the fact, states that he was falling a tree, and a branch struck him on the head. An inquest will be held. On Saturday afternoon a boat race, between crews from the Treasury and Audit departments respectively, came oft". The course was from the wharf to the baths. The Treasury crew was much the best, and won easily ; but it may at the same time be stated that there were several mishaps in the Audit boat, such as stretchers giving way, &c. Mr. Parsonage, of Taiakori Road, called on us last night and pointed out that whilst he was registered on the electoral roll for 1874-75 as a freeholder, he is not on that of 1875-76, although his name has never appeared as that of a person objected to. This evening a meeting will be held in the Buckle-street school, for the purpose of electing a committee. This is the first meeting of the kind, and we hope to see a large attendance. The following horses were sent away on Saturday, by the Hawea<—For South—Guy Fawkes, Cocksure, Banker, Haphazard, Hercules and FiretaiL For North—Templeton, Taupo, Pungawerewere, Daniel O'ltorke and Tattler. Mr. J. H. Wallace addressed the electors of the Country Districts at the schoolroom, Ohariu Valley, on Saturday evening, the 18th inst., about thirty electors being present. Mr. James Bryant occupied the chair. Mr. Wallace went fully into the various subjects likely to occupy the attentien of the new Parliament. A vote of thanks, moved by Mr. Darby, was carried unanimously. Thanks to the chairman closed the proceedings. Mr. Wallace will address the electors this evening at lialwarrawarra. A cricket match was played on the Albion ground on Saturday between the second eleven of the Star Club, and an eleven from the Lion Foundry. The match was decided by the first innings on either side, the Stars scoring 49 runs, and the Lions 44. On Saturday evening the " Colleen Bawn" was repeated to a fairly large audience. Mr. Wheatleigh's Myles NaCoppaleen and Danny Mann were capital characters, and as much unlike the ordinary hackneyed representations we generally see, as they could possibly be. This evening will be a grand comedy night, and to-morrow night Mr. Burford takes a benefit. On this occasion the great play, " The Octoroon," will be presented, Mr. Wheatleigh playing Salem Scudder, and Mr. Burford Jacob McCloskey. Independently of the attractive bill there should be a full house, for Mr. Burford has always been a favorite, and deserves well of the public. The first meeting of the Wellington Philosophical Society in the new Museum will take place to-morrow evening.
