CITY COUNCIL.
Thursday, August 19. The Council met at four o'clock. PresentMessrs. Dransfield (in the chair), Mills, Moss, Cleland, Ramie, Greenfield, and George. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. COBBESFONDENCE. The following inward correspondence was read by the Town Clerk:—A letter fromW. P. Jackson, re wharf crane, and one from Thomas Mason, as agent for E. Heath, re widening of Willis-street. Ordered to be considered in committee. WATERWORKS COMMITTEE'S REPORT.
The following report was read:— "Your committee have to report that they have authorised the payment of the account of the Nelson Corporation for £315, for pipes supplied. " With a view to carrying out certain further extensions, the Surveyor has been instructed to call for tenders for the following works: —
" 1. To continue the tunnel at the west, or Kaiwarrawarra stream end, for sludge pipes and flood outlets.
"2. Clearing the bush to a specified height above the proposed maximum water level of the storage reservoir and silt basin ; stumping and removal of all decayed timber and roots andvegetation throughout the whole areas of the reservoir, silt basin, and shingle traps. " Also to report on the quantity of fencing required, and estimated cost of same. "To serve the necessary notices on ' The Morning Star,' ' Baker's Hill,' and ' Golden Crown,' or other companies, goldmiuing companies, of the Council's intention to resume occupation of the lands leased to them, in terms of their respective leases; also to remove all mining plant, &c, &c. " The Surveyor was also empowered to consult with Mr. Blackett whenever deemed necessary." The report was adopted.
WHABF COMMITTEES REPORT. The following was read : " Your committee recommend that the Surveyor be instructed to prepare an order for ironbark piles, to be used for the purpose of mooring posts along the face of the breastwork, for fixing extra mooring piles on the wharf, for double-banking ships, and for one dolphin at each end of the outer T, in place of the present screw-moorings, and that such piles be obtained from Australia without delay." The report was adopted.
SANITARY COMMITTEE'S REPORT. The following report was read : "After due consideration of Mi - . Turner's application for compensation on account of loss of nightman's license, your committee decline to entertain his request." The report was adopted. *
PUBLIC WORKS COMMITTEE'S REPORT. The following was read : "In reference to an application made by Mr. Rixon, respecting the drainage of his premises at junction of Dixon and Willis streets, your committee recommend that the City Surveyor give the necessary notices to carry out the drainage under section 324 of the Municipal Corporations Act. " In the matter of claim made by Mr. Allen, on behalf of a Mr. August, for alleged damages to a cart, your committee find that the accident occurred in a private road, and by the fault of the driver of said cart, and therefore they cannot recommend that any compensation be made to Mr. August. " On petition respecting the state of Harborstreet, the committee recommend that the Surveyor be instructed to attend to it; also, that he attend to Sydney-street.
"On letter from Messrs. Krull and Co., offering some Bremen flagstones for footpaths, the committee suggest that the Surveyor be authorised to purchase and lay down the flagstones as foot-pavement in all cases where the owners of the adjoining properties are prepared to pay 'in advance half the estimated cost.
" The committee's attention having been drawn to certain works being executed by Mr. O'Malley on acre No. 467, adjoining the Terrace, they have instructed the Town Clerk to write to him, warning him that the Council will hold him responsible for any damages that may accrue to the Terrace-road by reason of such works. " The committee recommend that the Surveyor be authorised to erect a turnstile in Moore-street, to prevent horses, &c, from passing through, thus damaging the steps lately constructed.
" On letter from Mr. Birch, re Little Pipi-tea-street, the committee advise that the Surveyor repair the footpath in Murphystreet at its junction with Little Pipitea-street. " With reference to a ' hollow' in Tiuakoriroad, complained of by Mr. J. Davies, the committee recommend that the Surveyor attend to it at his convenience." The report was adopted. NEW APPOINTMENT. The Council agreed that a clerk of works be appointed, to act as assistant to the City Surveyor; his Balary to be at the rate of .£2OO per annum. The Council then adjourned.
