AMERICAN EXHIBITION, 1876.

TO TIIE EDITOR. Sin,—An article in your morning's paper informs me all foreign countries of any importance will contribute largely to this gigantic undertaking. It will surely be very detrimental to this colony remaining unrepresented: and to many individuals, who are deprived of the right of personally contributing, the neglect will be of serious importance. Individualising, I may say it is so to me. The West India Islands, and the whole of tropical America, according to the published reports, waste every year hundreds of thousands of tons of manilla, pineapple, aloe, and other valuable fibres, for want of efficient machinery to clean them. Such machinery having defied even Yankee ingenuity to produce, is stated by the Press as the desideratum of the age. The years devoted to this special subject has enabled me. to solve this problem, and practically test the same upon those fibres grown in the Fiji Islands. Such a discovery would, I think, have been creditable to New Zealand to exhibit, amongst her many other important items, whereas I am now driven to seek its introduction under another flag, at a great expenditure of trouble and outlay that ought not to have been entailed upon mo. The indifference and apathy shown on tho part of the Government to apply for space in this Exhibition, will, I think, be generally regretted and disapproved of.—l am, &c, CBABLBS J. POWXALL. Wellington, February 17.
