THORNDON SCHOOL, MOLESWORTHSTREET.
This SChofal, of which Mrs. Corlett is the Principal, has just been examined by Mr. Lee., the Inspector of Schools, who has made the following highly favorable report:—■ , ■ Wellington, November 18. Macau,—Although almost a stranger to you and the children under your care, I have great pleasure in acceding to your wish that I should, when I had time, examine your school and say what I thought of it. My opinion, whatever It may be worth, is most disinterested and Impartial. Your scholars of about seven to eleven years of age are the sons and daughters of very respectable citizens, and tho children themselves were so well-mannered and interesting that I had a most pleasing duty before me. I found that all your pupils read a passage of prose with an accuracy, fluency, and knowledge of what they read sufficient for their age and creditable in results for the time they had been under tuition. The writing and spelling (with one marked exception as to spelling in a boy with whom the defect is chronic) were remarkably good. One style of writing pervades the school—a plain, bold, and carefully formed hand. The arithmetic was sufficiently advanced for children of their age, but it might have been more accurate. The tables were pretty well known. I was particularly pleased with the manner in which the children had been taught to think, and the amount of general information possessed by them. There was evidence of real education and the training of the young minds. I consider the programme of work, which you seem to have adopted, to be a good one—except, perhaps, that reading history, learning roots, and doing any work which is unintelligible is next to useless and in other respects baneful. —lam, &c, ' Robert Lee, Inspector of Schools. «r Mrs. Corlett, Molesworth-street.
