WEDNESDAY, Nov. 7th.

Rangihaeata and Bushman made a start for the first hurdle, Slipper keeping some distance in the rear. Bushman took the hurdle first, Rangihaeata refused, and Stipper fell over the hurdle throwing his rider. Bushman kept the lead, clearing all his hurdles in good style ; the others were distanced. The second heat Bushman walked over the course.

To this succeeded a maori race for which seven horses were entered" and started, onlytwo, however, came in, the other horses having bolted. The two horses were very well ridden by their native riders, arid the race proved a very interesting one.

At starting Rangihaeata took the lead, followed by Warlock, half way round on heavy ground Fancy Boy fell, and/ being closely followed by Screw and Slipper they fell also, the three horses and riders rolling on the ground together. Screw's rider luckily held his horse, remounted and saved his distance, Slipper got away from his rider. Fancy Boy did not recover the effects of his fall until the race was over. Rangihaeata won the first heat ; the two next heats were easily won by Screiv.
