LATEST EUROPEAN NEWS. [From the Sydney Morning Herald, Dec 11.]
The arrival of the ship Waterloo, after a fine run of one hundred and two days (including a detention at Port Phillip) has put us in possession of English news to the 31st August. The long continued rains of August had caused some fears for the harvest, but as the weather had cleared there were hopes of an abundant crop. Trade was still dull. The wool sales were progressing, but we fe^ar the prices were scarcely equal to those realised at Liverpool. We have not however seen any catalogues with details. We regret to observe that the Chartist conspiracy was still in active operation throughout England. A number of arrests bad been made at Manchester, Birmingham, and London, and the discoveries which had been made showed that the designs of some of the leaders were of the most bloodthirsty description. In Ireland arrests of parties concerned in the insurrectionary movement continued to be made. Martin, who succeeded Mitchell in the editorship of the Felon, was found guilty, and sentenced to be transported for ten years. His brother challenged the Foreman of the Jury ! for which he was adjudged to be guilty of contempt of Court, and sentenced to be imprisoned for twelve months. A Special Commission for the trial o.f OBrien and others for high treason was to be issued in September. In France the Government was still in a most wretched state. Louis Blanc had abi sconded, in consequence of the Assembly "having given its consent to his being tried for a participation in the revolt of the 15th of Maj. ( He was supposed to be in England. - There was a prospect of peace being established between Germany, and Italy. The French Assembly had refused to sanction an armed intervention in favour of Venice. y
