SWAN RIVER.

[From the Sydney Herald."] The Perth newspapers contain little news of general interest. The colony appears to progress very slowly ; but the settlers seem to be comfortable and contented. The stock is increasing so rapidly, that, as no immigrants arrive to purchase their supplies, it has become necessary to boil down sheep for the tallow ; several experiments had been made, which were very satisfactory. Some attention is being paid i to ship-building, several small vessels having j been built, which are highly spoken of. Go- \ vernor Hutt, it was reported, had resigned ; ' but to the date of the latest English news no successor had been appointed. Great indigna- j tion appears to have been excited in consequence of Mr. Owen, a resident of South Australia, having procured a number of labouring men to proceed from Swan River to Adelaide. South Australia is designated " that sand hole," and Mr. Owen is denounced as a " trafficker in human flesh." The labour market is sure to find its own level, and whenever wages are higher in Western than in South Australia, the tide of emigration will set the other way. Three years ago labourers went from Sydney to New Zealand ; now they come from New Zealand to Sydney : and should the land question be settled, and an influx of capital take place, next year will probably see some of them going back again.
