MATCH AT DEVONPORT A splendid contest was witnessed at Devonport in tho meeting of North Shore and the Navy, tho match ending in a draw. The ground conditions were ideal and both teams were permitted to indulge in fast and open methods. Neither eide could claim any marked territorial advantago. A feature of the cxchunges was tho Btrong defensive play of both teams, while the halves alsa showed considerable skill in opening up the play. Showing splendid anticipation in the Navy goal, Farnill saved his side on several occasions. He handled cleanly and placed his clearing kicks to advantnge. Watts and Howe were a sturdy pair of defenders, while in the halves Buss and Shirras played outstanding games. Solid on defence. Buss arid Shirras also displayed fine judgment in setting their own forwards in motion. Leonard was not tho usual force in the forwards, although he would have been more effcctivo had he received adequate support from the inside forwards. Elwell was always dangerous when given a chance, but he showed a tendency to stray out of position. Bellamy swept across several nice oentres. , „ Cowie proved a safe custodian tor iSortli Shore, dealing effectively with a wide range of shots, while Gerrard and C. Ekman provided a sound back line. The fullbacks showed good understanding in thwarting the Navy attackß. R. Stone dominated tho play of the halves, being especially attractive on defence, while Walters also offered solid support. McCluskey. as usual, proved the Bpearhead of the attack, his tricky runs and subtle footwork having the Navy defenders worried. Moore and E. Ekman were valuable supports in the front-line. Goals were scored for the Navy by Bellamy and Leonard, while McCluskey and Stone netted for North Shore. Mr. Lonsdale was referee.
