LOWER MAUKU

A meeting of the settlers of this district was held in the house of Mr. W. 11. Morley, on the evening of the 2drd instant, for the purpose of taking into consideration the importance and necessity of providing schoolaccomodation for the neighbourhood. The Rev. T. Norrie having taken the chair, it was then unanimously agreed to erect a school-house, and occasional place of worship in connection with the Presbyterian Church. It was further resolved, that as Major Speedy had kindly offered an acre of ground for the above purpose, in a beautiful and most eligible position, near the Mauku, bridge, the said oiler, be accepted, and the best thanks of the meeting be awarded to the donor for his liberality. A building committee was then appointed,—subscription lists were opened, and about £2O subscribed on the spot.

We hope that this much needed requirement will soon be obtained. There being no school nearer than Waiuku on the one hand, distant about tea miles, and Drury on the other, distant about thirteen miles, the necessity of doing something to supply the educational wants, will be apparent to all. The settlers also hope that by erecting the proposed building, additional facilities will be afforded for supplying, more fully, tbe religious wants of the district, inasmuch as they have the prospect of obtaining tbe services of various ministers who visit the neighbouring districts, and who have indicated their willingness to preach occasionally in this district, when a convenient place of meeting is provided.— Communicated,
