PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND.

From a pirvatc source in Charlotte Town wo have received a few files of the Monitor.to the 4th of June, and from the same source we learn that the accounts of this Province sent there hy those who atrived here in the brig Prince Edward, are of so favourable a nature as to cause many of their former fellow-colonists to determine on joining them here.

The prize of £IOO offered by the International Exhibition Commissioners, for the best essay on “ Nova Scotia and its resources,” has been awarded to Thomas F. Knight, Esq., a son of Dr. Knight of Charlotte Town. There were thirteen competitors. The judges were Chief Justice Young, Judge Wilkins, and Hon. J. W. Johnston. Many persons had recently left Prince Edward Island fur British Columbia, attracted by the gold fields opened there. “ Pbesbytekv of P. E. Island.— This Presbytery met on the 14th Inst.,in Charlotte Town. There were present the Rev. R. S, Patterson, Moderator, Rev. J. Allan, Rev. I. Murray, Rev. A. Munro, Rev. 11. Crawford, Rev. George Sutherland, clerk, Rev. Allan Fraser, Rev. Donald M’Ncill, Rev. R. Laird, and Rev. William Rons —and Messrs. Clark, McMillan, Robertson, Laird, Beuirsu?, and M’Leod, elders. The trials for ordination of Mr. A. M’Lean were heard and the pres bytery being alone, took a conjunct view of those trials and agreed to sustain them. At a future sederunt, it was resolved that Mr. M'Lean’s ordination should take place, at Danilas on the 19th June.” From the Monitor of the 14th May wo extract the following:— “ P. E. Islanders Abroad.—Wc have been highly gratified to learn that Mr. John A. Stewart, of this island, who is studying medicine in M'Gill College, Canada, carried off, at the closing examination, the annual prize given to the class to which lie belonged. Mr. William P. Warburton, who is now a medical student in the Edinburgh University, has also distinguished himself. A somewhat lengthy, though exceedingly well-written account of New Zealand and its affairs lias also been handed to us by a gentleman

of this city. We shall have great pleasure in placing before our readers portions, at least, of this interesting MS. in future numbers of the Monitor. From our own personal knowledge of the writer we feel assured that the utmost reliance may be placed upon his statements. He is a man of veracity, and one of the last we should ever suspect of a desire to deceive or mislead any one.” The writer alluded to is Mr. H. D Morpeth, lately of Mongonui, and now of this city, and we can bear willing testimony with that of the Editor of the Monitor, which wo have quoted above, as to the value and truthfulness of the letters sent from here by Mr. Morpeth. We arc glad to find that these representations of the comparative superiority of New Zealand as a field for settlement over that of Prince Edward Island have not been without their fruit, and that the efforts to benefit his late fellow-colonists is likely to be attended by the acquisition to this Province of the most valuable of all classes of settlers—those already colonised.
