HOARDINGS.

J COUNTY COUNCILLORS YIEWS. j bome Interesling coniment on the erectiou of hoardings in the rural , districts was made at yesterday's meeting of the Waitaki County Council and it clearly indicated that the cainpaign' for the abolition of this methofi cf advertising is not j unanimous. ' The subjeci cropped up when a ietter was read from the raihvay , advertising department which adj vised that it was their intenlion to i erect on their property at Pukeuri ; at 6ft by 12ft advertisement. The loj cation would hc sulh tlial ii would j not in anv way interfere with any works or beautifying ecliemes. ' Opposition to increasing dis- ( figurement of the roadsides and rural scenery by advertisements and ! hoardings was made in a circular letter from thc Oamaru Beautifying Society, which also gavc an outline of Mr E. P. Lee's proposed j Bill to restrict the erectiou cf such signs. The co-operation of the Council in the movement, and sup- , port for Mr Lee's measure were ear nestly desired hy the Society. The chairman (Mr W. Gardiner): They can't stop a person putting up a hoarding on private property. The Mayor of Oamaru has hoardings up all over the place and I can't see that they do any harm. Mr J. Rodman said the erection of hoardings had become an abuse of the public highway. He would like j to support the Beautifying Society. Certainly husiness-men should disI play their wares but there was adj vertising and advertising. Some of I the hoardings were certainly un- | sightly. He moved that the Beautij fying Society be supported in its ! campaign against hoardings. ! Mr A. Mclnnes; Supposing a per- | son erected a hoarding on his own I property, have we the power to pre- ! vent it? Mr Rodman: This is an effort to ; get the power. Mr Gardiner. If a person asked me for permission to put up a hoarding I would say "Yes," and defy them to stop me. Mr R. B. Meek seconded the motion which was carried.
