A defeci tive chimney in the wash-house : aiiached to the main building was I ihe cause and ihis was also re- ■ cpcnsible for a second hlaze shortlv . -afierwards. This was quickly under ; control. At yesterday's meeting of the : Waitaki Electric Power Board, the j engineer-manager (Mr I. At a siiting of the Arhitration Court at Timaru yesterday two claims foi compensation were heard. In one, a joiner, F. Palmer, of Waimate who suffered from an injury to a thumb in the course of his employment failed in his claim on the ground that the injury did not totally incapacitate him and clefendant had already paid him £81 12s. In the other case T. and J. Thomson draper were ordered to pay £400 in a lump sum to J. B. Cumming, carter for ihe firm, who lost a right leg as the result of an accident.

The Hon. G. J. Anderson, Minister of Labour, in reply to a Pukeuri farmers' deputation urging the abolition of the Arhitration Court, pointed out that the Court as now established* protected the interests of the public as well as the parties to a dispute, and if abolished a labour disputes investigation Act would have to take its place. Round the .table conferences would have to. be held to settle industrial disputes and the public would not be represented in these. The Minister held that the farmers would be no better off if the Court were abolished, but iji the face of the influential demands in this direction, the position would have to be 'investigated by the Government. He also held that wages was but a small factor in the present depressionQuite a number of ratepayers of the Waitaki County have not ye': paid their rates although the ten per cent penalty was imposed last week. At yesterday's meeting of the Council it was reported that £1334 was outstanding and a suggestion was made that proceedings be taken against ratepay'ers who had not paid by April 30th. Mr J. Rodman remarked that the people were hard up and were unable to pay and he did not think they should be served with a summons. Mr R. B. Meek said there was a shortage of money because the farmers were unable to sell their wheat. The suggestion to take legal proceedings for all rates unpaid by April 30 was adopted. An opportunity, unusual at this time of the year, of securing bargains in clothing, is offered hy Mr H. Grenfell, who is running a two weeks salc commencing to-day.
