SHANGHAI, March 23. The British, French, and Japanese Consuls-'Generai have succeeded I in getting in touch with Paichinghsi, thus estahlishing official contact between the foreign authorities in Shanghai and the Nationalist forces. Paichinghsi affirmed his intention to protect foreign life and property and suppress violence and disorder. It was whijlf^ attempting to reach General Paichineshi to seek his intervention for tne evacuation of 5000 children from a burning Ang-lo-French convent chapei that Johntson and Heywood got into trouble. A truculent mob swarmed over their car. Some advised killing them and others, slitting their throats. Revolvers and rifles were pointed at them from all directions, some pressing against them. Finally a prominent official managed to convince the crowd that their mission was peaceful but before he wa)s allowed to go Johnson was compelled to sign a statement that he was sorry he had introduced members of the British Army into Chinese territory without Nationalist permission.
