MACHINE GUNS CHATTER.

40 KLLED ; MANY WOUNDED. SHANGHAI, March Zb. The Dnrham Light Infantry, defending the northern boundary of the international settlement, was attacked at twilight by a large force of mixed Chinese, including plain clothes Cantonese troops and local labour agitators. Four defenders were wounded. The Durhams replied with machine guns. It is estimated that 40 were killed and many wounded. The situation is increasing in gravity. Gueriila warf^re in the native quarter ha& resumed on a large scale. Regnlars of the Nation- • alist army were sent to clear out Shantung stragglers and plain clothes G~antonese guerillas, who have terrorised the Chapei district by street fighting and anarchy in the past two days. The Shanghai General Labour | Union is reported to have distributed arms in huge quantities to thousands of new recruits to the laboiir ranks. There are prospects of a prolonged struggle between the Cantonese regul,ar/ and plain clothes igitators, which means a dispute etween the left and right wings of he Kuomintang, which was com•enced at Hankow and transferred ■ the Shanghai area. Both foreign settlements are comarativelv quiet. A fair amount of business is being transacted. The strike is incomplete and is reported to be called off.
